Today's Workout

Rainy weather and cold temps forced me to the gym, which wasn't so bad after all. My workout consisted of a 30 minute cardio warm up (bike and treadmill) and 40 minutes of weightlifting. Overall, it felt good, especially the 10 minutes I spent in the steam room after wards. Tomorrow I start training for the Myrtle Beach Half-Marathon.

Multi-Tasking I Can Deal With

Unless you are fortunate enough to be a professional athlete, working and working out do not go hand in hand. Most of us schedule our workouts around the demands of our jobs and other responsibilities. Now we can exercise while we toil away in our cubical cells. Well maybe not run, but at a least walk. How is this miracle possible? Introducing the treadmill desk.

A treadmill desk or treadmill workstation in your cube is not the ideal exercise situation, but its better than nothing. Plus, it'll help keep you awake after lunch. Is it a good idea?

I don't think mingling something I must do, work, with something that I love to do, workout, is a good idea. These people think its a good idea. Do you?

One Less Reason to Hate Walmart

Shopping at Walmart may help reduce the obesity rate. Who knew? The brains at Marginal Revolution (one of my favorite blogs) state that Walmart's low prices may encourage the consumption of healthier foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

I'm still not a Walmart fan.

More on The Olympic Medal Count

James directed me to this chart that compares medals won to a country's population and GDP. Take a look I think you'll find the results pretty interesting.

The Real Medal Count

The Chinese did NOT win the Olympic medal count. The United States not only won more total medals, but more US athletes won more gold metals than athletes from any other country.

Today's Workout

First a short run (2m) on the Black Creek Greenway followed by a short mountain bike ride at Umstead Park.

The first half of the run was slow and relaxing. The second half was at a slightly faster less relaxed pace. Felt good - no noticeable knee problems.

The bike was was at a relaxing pace, except for the hills. Again, no noticeable knee issues. Life is good.

The numbers:
2.11 mile running
10.22 miles biking
Total workout time = 1 hr 16m 30 secs

Tomorrow's workout is 1 hrs of weightlifting, possibly followed by a short swim.

Dusting Off the Blog

I was inspired by one of Roman's blog entries on EveryMan Triathlon to resurrect my blog. Doing so was much easier than I expected. I only had to enter my password. The hard part is maintaining it. My goal is 2 entries per week.

Wish me luck

60 Minutes 6 Days A Week

That's my main fitness goal, not resolution, for 2008. I will average at least 60 minutes of training per day per week (based on a 6 day training week). In other words, I will run, bike, swim, or lift weights (or a combineof 2 or more of those activities) for at least 1 hour a day.

In 2007, because of a broken bone in my foot, I lost about 3 training months and missed out on several races that I planned on doing. This year, with careful, consistent, and deliberate training I will participate in at least 2 - 3 triathlons, 2 - 3 duathlons, and at least 4 road races ( maybe even a marathon). I'll list my target races in few days.

I'll update my progress on a semi-regular basis starting this week.

Happy New Year!
